Outreach

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing , I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Matthew 25:35

Food and Clothing Ministries

In conjunction with the Community Kitchen of Birmingham Ascension provides a meal to the guests at Grace Woodlawn Episcopal Church twice a year. Also twice yearly, Ascension provides dinner for the students at Trinity Commons, a diocesan outreach ministry to UAB. Ascension also continues weekly collections of food for Urban Ministries and collects clothing and other items for 55th Place thrift shop.

Home Construction and Repair

Ascension works in conjunction with the Christian Service Mission in the Pratt City area rebuilding and cleaning up tornado damaged homes. Prior to working with Christian Service Mission, Ascension participated in two builds per year with Habitat for Humanity.

Sawyerville Day Camp (Episcopal Diocese of Alabama)

Ascension supports the Sawyerville day camp program for disadvantaged boys and girls in Hale County by providing towels and new books for the campers, a meal for the counselors and letters of encouragement for the staff.

Outreach Fundraisers

Ascension fields a gumbo team for the Gumbo Gala that raises support the programs for the residents of Episcopal Place. In prior years our gumbo teams have won trophies for best gumbo and the Spirit Award.

Biennially, Ascension holds a huge rummage sale. The funds generated from sale support a wide range of ministries. After the event in 2012, proceeds were given to support the diocesan hunger and medical mission work in Haiti, to the missionary work of Global Teams, to the campus ministry at UAB, and to programming for the elderly at Episcopal Place.

Vocation

Baptismal Covenant, Book of Common Prayer

In addition to the good work Ascension does as a parish, the members of Ascension spend countless hours each month volunteering as well as financially supporting other ministries, youth serving organizations, and social service programs. Members of Ascension serve on the boards of the YMCA, the Boy Scouts of America, Gateway, Vestavia Hills Library and Episcopal Place. Additionally, members serve as Boy and Girl Scout leaders, coaches, hospice and hospital volunteers, mentors, and in many other ways too numerous to list.
